Amazing things happen when you don’t expect them.
I was looking for a wife in Ukrainian agencies, and finally came across a most lovely girl from the city of Kharkov (http://www.ukreine.com) for whose looks I did fall in a flash. Letters that she wrote me proved that she was an intelligent girl as well, and it seemed that she had fallen for me as well.
I didn’t have means to undertake several trips to Ukraine, in fact I could only afford one, happily enough a return one :)
We met, and it was clear that we would make good companions for each other: she spoke relatively good English and was sensible enough not to force the events. Also, as she became aware of my financial state for that time, she was of course disappointed (as each one would naturally be), but she didn’t let me down.
We decided that I would return to the USA, and buy her a ticket as soon as I have enough money. There were three more days left before my leave.
And on the next day Carina showed up both disappointed and excited: she said that she had had news that could change our fate entirely!
It turned out that her aunt Sofya in Kiev (capital of the country), of whom she had only vaguely known, died and left a 5-room apartment, which Carina inherited.
She said we could easily sell the thing for 3,5 grand — in half a year, the time required in Ukraine to officially obtain the heritage.
She said it would of course be logical for her to feel sad, for it was one of her relatives who died, but the fact was that she barely knew her aunt and all she could feel (as well as me) was immense gratitude. We went to the church and, in accordance with Ukrainian traditions, lighted lots of candles for the peace of her soul.
Anyway I had to leave, and we remained in contact all the six months — it felt like years! But at last they were behind; Carina managed to sell the apartment in a week and I flew to Kharkov where we got married…
Since then we’re living happily here in Connecticut and both earn our living — but hadn’t it been for her aunt (peace be with her), it would have never happened…
